Rooted in the theme of the “Harvest Festival,” Thai Pongal is traditionally celebrated by Tamil communities around the world to express gratitude and hope for a prosperous future. The act of allowing milk to boil over in a clay pot symbolizes a sign of future abundance.
Additionally, the Thai Pongal festival marks the beginning of a new solar year, with Tamil Hindu devotees offering their first harvest to the Sun God during the Surya Mangala Day. Traditionally, this festival, which coincides with the harvest season, is associated with prosperity and thanksgiving. During this celebration, thanks are given to the rain, the Sun, and farm animals, which contribute to the success of the harvest.
The Thai Pongal festival organized by the National Water Supply and Drainage Board was held on January 20, 2025, at the board's head office. The event was attended by the Chairman of the National Water Supply and Drainage Board, Engineer Deepti U. Sumanasekara, the General Manager, Engineer T. Barathithasan, along with officials and staff members of the board.
