Under the new government, the National Water Supply and Drainage Board falls under the Ministry of Urban Development, Construction and Housing. The Minister in charge of the subject, Dr. Anura Karunathilaka, visited the National Water Supply and Drainage Board on 05 December 2024 and engaged in a discussion on the future activities and current status of the Board. At this, the Chairman of the Board, Mr. Deepthi Sumanasekara, gave a very detailed explanation of the progress and excellent service that the Board has achieved in almost fifty years.
The Minister's close attention was drawn to the drinking water coverage of the island, the financial status of the Board, the projects under construction and the proposed development plans. Speaking at the event, Minister Dr. Anura Karunathilaka stated that water is a human right and the government is committed to providing clean drinking water to the people, and these are the institutions that are obligated to fulfill their responsibility for that. The Minister further informed that maximum support will be provided at every step necessary to achieve the desired goals and for the future progress of the Board to provide good service to the people and to resolve the issues. Deputy Minister T.B. Sarath, Ministry Secretary Ranjith Ariyaratne, Chairman of the National Water Supply and Drainage Board Engineer Deepthi Sumanasekara, General Manager Engineer Bharathidasan, officials of the Ministry and the Board's top management, Additional General Managers, Deputy General Managers and other officials participated in this event.
